A Montessori Approach to Family Meetings

Consider implementing a weekly family meeting where all members can openly discuss matters that concern them.

  • Utilize a 'talking or peace stick' during the meeting (and during future disagreements) to ensure everyone has a chance to express themselves without interruption.

  • Begin by sharing compliments about one another.

  • Encourage the children to discuss challenges or concerns they have about a situation, highlighting solutions rather than blame or consequences.

  • Empower the children to come up with their own strategies, nurturing their ability to tackle challenges effectively throughout their lives.

  • If they struggle to find solutions, ask if they would like your assistance in generating ideas.

  • Strive for a consensus for the proposed solutions among all family members.

  • Trial the agreed-upon solution for one week, and review its effectiveness during the subsequent family meeting.

  • One parent could take notes on a piece of colorful construction paper, writing down every members thoughts and ideas to make the children feel seen and “heard.”

  • Then, circle/underline agreed upon strategies and all members sign names at bottom of that so there is buy-in and family comradery.

  • Post agreement on fridge or in a family space.

  • End with a family fun activity.
