A Montessori Approach to Family Meetings
Consider implementing a weekly family meeting where all members can openly discuss matters that concern them.
Utilize a 'talking or peace stick' during the meeting (and during future disagreements) to ensure everyone has a chance to express themselves without interruption.
Begin by sharing compliments about one another.
Encourage the children to discuss challenges or concerns they have about a situation, highlighting solutions rather than blame or consequences.
Empower the children to come up with their own strategies, nurturing their ability to tackle challenges effectively throughout their lives.
If they struggle to find solutions, ask if they would like your assistance in generating ideas.
Strive for a consensus for the proposed solutions among all family members.
Trial the agreed-upon solution for one week, and review its effectiveness during the subsequent family meeting.
One parent could take notes on a piece of colorful construction paper, writing down every members thoughts and ideas to make the children feel seen and “heard.”
Then, circle/underline agreed upon strategies and all members sign names at bottom of that so there is buy-in and family comradery.
Post agreement on fridge or in a family space.
End with a family fun activity.
