Savor the Season: Balanced Eating During the Holidays

The holiday season is fast approaching, which means lots of festive gatherings, heartwarming memories with family and friends, the spirit of togetherness and of course sumptuous feasts!

From savory roasts and comforting sides to sweet desserts and delightful beverages, holiday feasts are the central part of all celebrations.

Balanced eating during the holidays is by no means about restriction, rather making conscious choices to create a harmonious blend of delicious food and good health. In this way, one can maintain sustained energy levels during a busy season, positively impact mood and reduce stress and set an example for children by balancing indulgent foods with nutritious choices for lifelong habits.

Here are my suggested tips for families:

try the 80/20 rule which means eat optimally 80% of the time, then indulge 20% of the time. How does one go about doing this?

  1. Eat colorful foods that are mainly plant-based as part of a daily routine- charcuterie style snack boards for after school and bento boxes for school lunches are inviting and appealing for kids and adults alike.

  2. Aim for a hearty, nourishing breakfast for a great start to the day.

  3. Get kids involved in the kitchen!

  • Depending on age and stage of your child, read recipes, grocery shop together, practice safe kitchen skills, set the table and clean up after meals which are great family bonding opportunities.

  • For older kids/teens, offer them choice and agency by letting them decide and then prepare the meal.

4. Consider meal planning as much as possible to eat meals at home when not attending social events.

  • Homemade soups and broths are perfect for cold/flu season, prepare large batches of food the first time and incorporate them into subsequent meals, choose simple recipes with simple ingredients for familiar and favorite family meals, prep ingredients ahead to streamline cooking, reuse leftovers.

5. For potluck gatherings and/or bringing a dish for the host, opt for nutrient-dense options that your family enjoys.

6. At social events, consider a plate of balanced choices that includes protein, vegetables and grains to keep you full and satisfied

7. Sit together at the dinner table and savor the flavors and conversations- nothing is more nourishing for the soul!

Overall, balanced eating allows you to enjoy the festivities while prioritizing your family’s health and well being. Cheers!
